Nestled on a sun-drenched corner of Mount Pleasant, just a short stroll from the bustle of Broadway, Milano Coffee Roasters greets you with a scent that hits before you even reach the door: the warm, caramelized aroma of beans roasting just feet from the espresso bar. This is no ordinary café. It is a working roastery, a community living room, and a time capsule of Italian coffee tradition all at once.

Step through the gate windows—those signature folding doors that blur the line between inside and out—and you’ll likely spot Brian Turko behind the bar or near the roaster, dialing in the day’s offerings. Turko, a guitarist turned coffee obsessive, carries three decades of Vancouver coffee history in his pocket. He was mentored for 15 years by Italian master roaster Francesco Curatolo, who arrived in Vancouver in 1984 with 75 years of family roasting knowledge in his luggage. When Curatolo returned to Italy in 2002, Turko and his wife Linda took the reins, rebranding the original West 8th roastery into what locals now simply call Milano.

“Coffee is really simple,” Turko told me once, pulling a shot of La Futura, the gold-medal-winning espresso that put Milano on the international map. “It’s about acidity, aroma, body, and flavour.” Simple in theory, perhaps, but in practice it is anything but. With up to 20 origin coffees on hand, a 13-bean blend called Lucky 13, and a patio that locals swear is one of the best dog-friendly decks in the city, Milano delivers an experience that feels both deeply European and unmistakably Vancouver
